Renewable energy and crowdfunding: these two modern concepts are also the main product and the way in which DC Power Co kicked off a campaign to make solar energy more accessible to millions of households across Australia. In this episode of our ‘A Place for Business’ web series, we had a great chat with Nic Frances Gilly and Liz Greenbank about their story and their take on social entrepreneurship.
DC Power Co kicked off its operations in 2017 thinking that there was more that could be done in terms of support and functionality when it comes to solar energy. Taking advantage of legislation and funding opportunities, they started a crowdfunding campaign in 2018 and over 17,000 people backed their idea.
After the investment, they started working on the pricing front and educating people on how to minimize their bill. They soon realised that the energy sector is comprised of huge players and savvy consumers who already expect to pay the minimum. Therefore, launching a company in such a complex industry would be quite the challenge.
Thinking of the best way to introduce new consumers to the benefits of solar-powered energy, they went after a package solution for beginners and that’s how they teamed up with Redback Technologies. Together, they designed a product offering that allows households to be more sustainable, spend less on energy on the long term and support three local businesses, all at once.
According to Nic, as a social entrepreneur that’s his main reason to go to work everyday. He knows that he is making environmental changes and making the world a better place, whilst having lots of investor, making business, profit and helping other companies along the way.
We’d like to thank Nic and Liz for taking their time and sharing this story with us.
